By now, you’ve seen this blog, or some variation of it. Photos taken at the exact perfect moment create optical illusions, or catch something terrible (or surprising) right before (or just as) it happens. I only wish I could share a photo of a moment so wild, so crazy, so inimitable. What I do have are three portraits of three very different emotions.
This is probably my favorite photo I’ve ever taken, the moment after a snake handler passed his pet over to my friend Danni in Penang, Malaysia. A tourist trap, for sure, but this look is priceless. Danni, if you’re reading this, I miss you!
This photo NEVER.FAILS.ME. My friend Allison was terrified of the ziplines we made her do in Costa Rica, and this image perfectly captures fear. She was a pro by the last line!
I don’t even remember who took this picture of me, but I’m a little haunted by it because it captures the exact moment I realized I never wanted to leave Africa. I was overcome. We were climbing some over some rocks, killing time before our ferry left Robben Island for Cape Town. I remember it was very hot. That was five years ago, almost to the day. Sometimes I forget how intense my feelings were for that place, and then I look at this picture.

ooh my god, your friend allison’s face is PRICELESS. that can’t be far off from what our own faces would look like while ziplining.
Omg Allison. That is the greatest picture of sheer terror I have ever seen!
